CLUBHOUSE RESTORATION

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT

Following extensive water ingress in 2021, we launched our Clubhouse Restoration project to ensure the Clubhouse can continue to serve the Club and local Community as well as it has since 1923.

Read below to learn more about the project and how you can support us.

2021 FLOOD

In January 2021, we were shocked to discover a water tank on our roof had leaked and caused enormous damage to the Clubhouse’s interior.

The bar and boardroom suffered the most damage, with the bar unable to open or host functions and the wooden roofed boardroom completely unusable. The closure of the bar has had a significant impact on the Club’s income and role in the community as a hub for use by our community partners.

Following inspections, it was clear that the roof and external structure needed considerable attention too. This would future proof the interior from any further unfortunate events.

Read more below to learn about the plan, the launch of our appeal including the 2023 Fundraising Dinner and our progress so far.

THE PLAN

Following conversations with our architects, the Club plans to tackle the restoration project in three phases.

Approximate costs were calculated in 2022 with the three phases estimated at £220k, £650k, and £75k, totalling in £945k.

  • Phase 1 will get the Clubhouse wind and watertight. This will include the removal of the water tank, renewing the lead, replacing the flat roof and repairing of slates.

  • Phase 2 aims to bring the interior of the Clubhouse into the modern age. Restructuring of the area allows for better use of the areas, including increased hireable space for functions. The showers and cricket toilets would also be moved to this floor, bringing a better experience for players and umpires.

  • The final phase would look at the current toilet, shower and storage area and convert it into accessible storage and a meeting space that perhaps could double as a museum. A small museum would be ideal to showcase the Club’s history to the Public.

FUNDRAISING APPEAL

The Board of Directors recognised the extensive fundraising that would need to take place in order to fulfil such a large project and immediately reached out to members and the community for support.

We are extremely grateful to the Glasgow City Heritage Trust who have supported us significantly with our fund with a grant.

One major part of the first phase of fundraising was our dinner that took place in September 2023. The dinner, with speakers Angus Fraser, Peter Wright, Alex McLeish and Frank McAvennie, was a huge success and contributor over £50,000 to the fund. We are very grateful to Douglas McCrea, Scott Murdoch, and Satty Singh who helped significantly in the organisation of the night.

PROGRESS

Work to complete Phase 1 on the project began in January 2024 and finished approximately 6 months later.

Unfortunately, more rotten wood was discovered than expected and, along with poor weather, the work took longer than required and at additional cost.

The delays and additional work costed an extra ~£90k taking the total to £313k for phase 1.

EDUCATION SESSIONS

As part of Phase 1, our contractors very kindly held sessions with Hyndland Secondary School to demonstrate the tools and skills that were being used on the Clubhouse. The students enjoyed the practical demonstration and several showed interest in venturing into a similar career in the future.

WHAT’S NEXT?

The Club is currently focused on restarting income generation through events and external hires. These activities are crucial to maintaining operations while we work towards fundraising for Phase 2 of our development.

In August, we proudly hosted our first major Club event in several years, with external hires beginning in late Autumn. This marks a significant milestone in the Club's progress.

However, while the function area has reopened, the Clubhouse remains outdated and unfit for the future. Completing Phases 2 and 3 is essential to achieving long-term sustainability.
