Selection structure:

Selection will be performed by the selection committee which is composed of the Chairman of Selectors, Captains and Vice Captains for all teams being selected. Mens selection will take place on Tuesday at 8PM. Womens selection will be held on Wednesdays at 8PM. Meetings will be held in person where possible but can be held virtually where necessary.

The purpose of the below selection criteria is to ensure that teams are selected in the purpose of:

  • Successful performance in

  • Team balance

  • Expected conditions

  • Team environment

Selection Criteria:

Performance - performance by players will be a key benchmark of player selection. Players will be selected for the team which most reflects their ability based on current, past and training performance, accounting for the other selection criteria.

Players roles -  players will be selected to fill a certain role in the team and to ensure that the team is balanced. This will change throughout the season based on conditions and team needs. Players who have inconsistent availability will be eligible for selection if they meet the necessary criteria but may not be picked ahead of similar players who are performing successfully in their roles.

Training - attendance and commitment at training will inform decisions made on player selection. Players should aim to be at their designated training sessions and communicate where they aren’t able to.

Development - one of the key aims of West is to ensure the ongoing development of players, especially our junior members. Selection decisions may be made to pick players to develop them over others. The selection committee reserve the right to allocate places in teams for junior players to support their development and senior players may also be selected due to future planning and development

Timeliness - timeliness in attending training, matchdays etc. will considered when making selection decisions

Availability - players are required to provide their availability by 6PM on the Tuesday prior to senior selection and 6PM on the Wednesday prior to womens selection. Players who have not provided their availability by the deadline will not be considered for selection ahead of any other player. By making yourself available you are available for the club rather than a specific team. If players pull out of games without mitigating circumstances, this will be considered for future selection.

Membership - players who have not paid either in full or via direct debit at the point of selection will not be eligible for selection ahead of any other player.

Values - a players application of the club values and their engagement with the wider club will be a consideration for their selection e.g. are they respectful, committed, prepared, punctual

Expectations of the selections committee:

  • Teams will be selected and shared on Spond by 10PM on Wednesday for weekend games

  • Teams will be selected and shared on Spond 3 days prior to weekday games

  • For players who have been dropped, Captain’s will communicate this to them ahead of teams being shared on Spond with reasoning behind the decision

Any questions regarding selection decisions should be raised to the relevant captain or to the chairman of selectors where the player deems it necessary. If they are not satisfied they can escalate this to the board of directors.
