Scotland face England in 150th Anniversary Heritage Match
On 12th September, Scotland will take on England in a special 150th Anniversary Heritage Match at Hampden to mark the first meeting between the two sides in 1872. West of Scotland Cricket Club looks forward to playing a part in the celebrations of this important moment in the history of football that will support the event.
On 30 November 1872, the Club hosted the first ever international football match between Scotland and England at Hamilton Crescent. The match was a 0-0 draw, but it was a historic event that helped to popularise football around the world. It is recognised by FIFA as the first international football match.
The match was organised by Queen's Park, the leading Scottish club at the time. They invited the Football Association (FA) to select an England team to face a Scotland team (which, as they selected it, consisted entirely of Queen's Park players). The match was a major success, and is considered to be the start of the modern international football era. The rules were very similar to those seen today: 11 players per team, a leather ball, similar shaped goals and two 45 minute halves.
There are multiple articles online with more information, including this one from the Scottish FA.
West of Scotland Cricket Club is proud to have played a role in this historic event.
