Titwood edge Partick to Win the Western Cup
On a glorious late sunny Saturday, the Partick XI traveled to Clydesdale Cricket Club to take on Titwood in the Western Cup final. A win would give Partick the treble, as they had already secured the league title and the Greenwood Trophy.
Skipper Williams lost the toss, and Partick were put in to bat on a fresh wicket. Anwar was dismissed early, but Mills and Page batted well, putting on 42 runs for the second wicket. However, after Mills and Page were dismissed for 24 and 8 respectively, Partick struggled to find the boundary and their run rate dropped. Wilson played an important knock of 24, including a magnificent six over square leg, but Partick could only manage 99 runs from their 20 overs.
In reply, the usual opening pair of Etheridge and Anwar opened the bowling. Partick kept it tight, with Titwood having to take risks to get the scoreboard moving. Anwar made the breakthrough in the fourth over with the score on 10, as Lord took an excellent catch at mid-on. It wasn't until the 10th over that Partick would have further success, this time Hulatt getting one through the defenses of Awan. At this stage, Titwood needed just 5 runs an over to win the Cup, and opener Murtaza was still there and looking dangerous. He blasted his way to 49 from 42 balls before also being dismissed by Hulatt, but the damage was already done, Titwood requiring 25 runs from 36 balls when he departed. Titwood reached Partick's score of 99 before a few silly wickets at the end saw them cross the line with 7 wickets down, but the result was confirmed: Titwood won by 3 wickets and won the Western Cup.
It was a disappointing end to the season for Partick, but the team can be very proud of their efforts, winning two of the three competitions and finishing runners-up in the other. Well done to Titwood, and we look forward to facing off again next season! Thanks also to Clydesdale for hosting the final.
