Why did we create a new website?
When undertaking a big project it is important to know why you are doing it. Improving our club website has been something discussed intermittently over the last few years. Shortly after the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, those of us who previously had expected to be very busy this summer suddenly found ourselves with a lot more free time than anticipated and decided we would dedicate some of this time to redeveloping our website.
A key objective was to better represent our club and its values through our website, the most important of which was to show that we are a club who values its people above all. So in that spirit, I asked a handful of club members to tell us what the club means to them.
Duncan Sutherland
Having first joined West in 2004, he left the club due to relocating before immediately re-joined after moving back to Glasgow.
“My first stint at West began in 2004 and my early memories are of feeling something very special about playing your cricket at Hamilton Crescent. Cricket is a huge time commitment for anyone but at West, the rewards for that commitment are deep and long-lasting. I’m very glad to be back!”
Sophie Trickett
Along with several of her school friends who were inspired by our former Overseas Amateur Nick Boller, Sophie joined West in 2018. Her ambition is to make a career in playing the sport. She has represented the Women’s XI, the Hamilton Crescent XI and all of our junior teams.
“I love being a West of Scotland CC player because I get to meet amazing people and it gives me the opportunity to play the sport. I love the West of Scotland CC community because everyone is so supportive and we push each other to be the best we can be, both on and off the field. It means the world to me to play for this great club.”
Gavin Smith
Gavin Smith joined West as a junior in 2000 and has gone on to play a vital role in our 1st XI bowling attack for many years, continuing to this day.
“West of Scotland CC is not just a great place to play cricket but also a club made up of many of the best people I have met.”
Moon Mughis
Moon Mughis joined West in 2018 shortly after our Women’s Section was founded.
Along with her daughter Nayman, Moon has played a vital role for the team in its very successful first season.
“It has always been my dream to play cricket alongside my daughter Nayma and West of Scotland CC helped me fulfil that dream. I am extremely thankful to everyone associated with the club for giving us such a great opportunity and for continuing to encourage and inspire us.”
Rayyan Suleman
Rayyan Suleman joined West Juniors in 2019, having previously dropped out of the sport at an earlier age he found the club for him.
“West of Scotland is a club like no other; they have great training facilities and the coaches are good-humoured and passionate. More than anything though is the being a part of a community. If you have the chance to join the club take it! You won’t regret it.”
Robbie Walsh
Robbie Walsh has been a junior member of West since 2016 and has represented the club at all junior players, becoming the most recent junior to breakthrough into the successful Partick XI.
“West is such a welcoming cricket club where everyone is so friendly and helpful. The senior section sets such a great example for us juniors to follow and are so encouraging to us. I love being a member here, the vibe is great!”
West of Scotland Cricket Club is a special place because of its people. I am honoured to be responsible for communicating our history, our values our optimism for a bright future but most all the people involved and their stories through this new website.
Michael Ashworth has been a member of West of Scotland CC since 2015, is a member of the coaching team and plays for whichever team his combination of occasional effectiveness with the ball, ineptitude with the bat and comical fielding is deemed suitable. He is currently serving as the club's Web Editor.
