Burns Lunch proves popular once again!

Bringing together the best of Scottish culture, cuisine, and chatter, the McCrea West of Scotland Cricket Club delivered an outstanding tribute to Scotland’s national poet, Robert Burns, on Sunday, 2nd February 2025. With more than 40 people in attendance, the celebrations offered something for everyone – whether you were there to honour the life and works of Robbie Burns, enjoy traditional music and spirited renditions, or simply indulge in the food!

The sound of the bagpipes (thanks to John Dew) set the stage for an afternoon, as Club Chairman Colin Mair extended a warm welcome to all present, with a special greeting to the guest of honour, Mr. Kenneth Robertson.

A group took centre stage to deliver Burns’ famous poem, Address to a Haggis, with plenty enthusiasm. Guests laughed as Chris plunged the knife into the haggis alongside the words, "An' cut you up wi' ready slicht." The Club was filled with conversation and laughter as everyone tucked into their meal, starting with soup, quickly followed by haggis, neeps, and tatties. With bottles of whisky, food vouchers, and home décor on the raffle prize table, guests were eager to try their luck at the raffle draw.

With glasses replenished and appetites satisfied, guests settled in to enjoy the outstanding Immortal Memory delivered by Mr. Kenneth Robertson. Striking the perfect balance of insight and humour, Kenneth paid an eloquent tribute to Burns’ enduring legacy, depth of character, and genuine connection to the people of Scotland. This was followed by the award-winning harpist Màiri Callan treated the audience to a set of harp performances and traditional songs.

To end the afternoon, the much-anticipated raffle winners were announced, with Club Captain James Fennah doing the honours. Chairman Colin Mair extended a special thanks to Cammy Sriram and Robert Corner for organising the excellent event, and to everyone who turned out to support West’s first big event at the Clubhouse in 2025. Finally, guests joined hands in the time-honoured tradition of singing Auld Lang Syne, a fitting finale to a magical afternoon of Scottish tradition.
