Partick win the Greenwood Trophy!
Every year, the Greenwood Trophy is contested at Albert Park, the home of Langide Cricket Club, in memory of Bill Greenwood. This year, the Partick XI faced a talented GHK in the final.
The journey to the final had not been an easy one with wins against Victoria, Helensburgh, and Meikleriggs being required to make it to this stage.
On the day, skipper Gurj Sandhu won the toss and elected to bat first on a used wicket. Mills and Jakobson opened the batting with the former falling victim to young talent Ullah in the first over. Runs from there on came slowly but consistently with Jakobson, Spensley and Deshmukh rotating the strike well and hitting the loose ball to the boundary. Deshmukh fell at the beginning of the 10th over with the score 59-3 to bring Corner to the crease to join Jakobson. The scoring rate increased as GHK rotated their bowlers as Partick pushed towards a competitive score. In the final overs, boundaries were hit while wickets also fell to leave Partick 127/7 off their 20 overs.
In their reply, GHK looked to get off to quick start with opener Ilyas hitting Etheridge for a big boundary in the first opener. His luck was to quickly run out though with Etheridge’s opening partner Anwar clean bowling Ilyas in the second over. From this point, wickets continued to fall at regular interviews with GHK at one point 25-5 with Etheridge taking 3, Anwar 1 and a run out contributing. Ahmed and Shamim provided some fightback but, with the required rate climbing, it seemed inevitable that more wickets would fall. And so they did, skipper Sandhu had Ahmed caught behind before Dhillon took three more wickets. Spensley completed the win with Corner taking his second catch behind the stumps to complete a 64 run victory.
A very professional win by the Partick XI to win the Greenwood Trophy and one the team can be very proud of. A big thanks to all the supporters who turned out and to GHK for a friendly, sporting match. Secondly, a huge thanks to Langside CC for hosting the match. Finally, thanks to Majid Haq and Colin Mclardie for umpiring and to Paul Coffey for the streaming and scoring of the match.
