Tom Boyce

Former players and older members were extremely sorry last week to learn the very sad news of the sudden passing of former player and longterm West member, Tom Boyce.

Tom joined West as a Junior and featured regularly in senior 1st and 2nd XIs between the 1970s and early 1990s, a talented batsman and skilful off spin bowler. He was a regular in the 1st XI which won the Western Union championship in 1991 and captained the 2nd XI thereafter.

Tom then represented Bute County as an “overseas player” (the ferry runs from Wemyss Bay), proving a very popular acquisition and joined on his travels for a period also by Nigel Clarke. Even recently, Tom had posted encouraging comments on the Bute County Facebook page as that club has returned to WDCU Championship Division 3 and he will be sadly missed by his many friends there too.

He was also a longterm member of Hyndland FP rugby club, taking up refereeing after his playing days, and more recently he became involved in youth football coaching.

Tom was a well-known character and undoubtedly made his mark in sporting circles in Partick, Hyndland, Jordanhill and the west end area. We offer our sincere condolences to his widow, Fiona, and children Andrew and Jennifer.

His funeral will take place at Maryhill Crematorium on Wednesday 17th July at 10.30a.m., followed by refreshments in the West of Scotland CC Pavilion.
